Gates Foundation | Innovative Data and Modeling Approaches to Measure Women’s Health

Objective: This Grand Challenge seeks innovative methodologies to improve the measurement of women’s health outcomes, addressing gender disparities and social determinants that remain inadequately represented in current global health frameworks.

Eligibility Criteria: Open to nonprofit organizations, for-profit companies, international organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions. Encourages applications from women-led initiatives, early-career researchers, and organizations based in low- and middle-income countries. Collaborative proposals across disciplines (e.g., public health, economics, gender studies, and data science) are welcomed.

Countries Covered: Global, with particular interest in applications that address cross-country or subnational comparisons.

Grant Amount: Up to $150,000 USD per project, with a duration of 18-24 months. Indirect costs must be included in the total budget (subject to the Gates Foundation’s indirect cost policy).

Eligible Activities:

  • Development of new measurement models or adaptation of existing models to enhance gender-sensitive health outcomes.
  • Utilization of existing or easily collectible datasets to improve women’s health analysis.
  • Integration of gendered, socio-cultural, economic, and structural determinants into health measurement frameworks.
  • Creation of tools or methodologies that allow comparative analysis and context-specific health insights.
  • Generation of policy-relevant, scalable, and actionable insights to inform decision-making.

Ineligible Activities:

  • Standalone data collection without analytical or modeling components.
  • Health interventions without a focus on measurement.
  • Refinements of existing composite indicators (e.g., DALY) without demonstrating methodological innovation.
  • Reliance on proprietary datasets without plans for public insight-sharing.
  • Proposals lacking a gender-sensitive and intersectional approach.

Deadline: March 25, 2025, 11:30 a.m. U.S. Pacific Time.

Additional Information: Applicants should align their proposals with the Women’s Health Innovation Opportunity Map 2023, ensuring projects contribute to addressing systemic gender health measurement gaps.
