The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of two years. Employment location will be Kyiv, Ukraine.
Welthungerhilfe (WHH) started working in Ukraine in March 2022 in response to the humanitarian situation caused by the escalation of the war and has been a registered International Non-Governmental Organisation since August 2022. As Country Director, you will have primary responsibility for the Joint Emergency Response in Ukraine (JERU), a joint mission with Concern Worldwide under the operational direction of Welthungerhilfe. You are responsible for developing and managing an impact oriented country program that generates a relevant contribution to the people we work with in Ukraine. You will lead the team in line with the JERU strategy and taking into account the global WHH strategy, mandate and WHH quality standards.
Your responsibilities
- Implement, review and adapt the JERU strategy together with the Alliance 2015 partner CONCERN, prepare a strategy for the next phase
- Act as primary focal point of the HQs in their interactions with the JERU team and ensure that Concern representatives are involved in critical decisions, such as opening up new areas, new sectors, donor approval or rejection decisions, structural revisions
- Ensure that all programatic, operational, financial and security protocols are up to date, compatible with the joint structure and revised as needed
- Ensure sound financial management of allocated funds
- Acquisition of funding from private and institutional donors, as well as expanding and maintaining a healthy donor portfolio
- Ensure country lean country structures and efficient and effective processes for JERU implementation in line with WHH procedures and standards
- Lead and manage expatriate and national staff, in particular ensuring compliance with security regulations
- Maintain and expand the cooperation with national and international partners
- Observe, analyze and report on relevant trends in Ukraine
- Update and ensure the application of preparedness plans for disasters and potential crises based on the country-specific situation
Your profile
- A university or college degree in a relevant field such as International Development, Humanitarian Aid, International Management or equivalent
- At least 10 years of project management experience and relevant leadership experience in international humanitarian aid and development co-operation, preferably in the region
- Experience in security/crisis management and working with partner organizations
- Knowledge of relevant German, European, US, global and UN donor environment
- Excellent HR Management skills paired with cultural sensitivity
- Coordination and organizational skills even under a high workload
- Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for working in Welthungerhilfe’s project countries
- Excellent spoken and written English; proficiency in German, Ukrainian or Russian language would be an advantage
