Our Organisation
Since 2018, Med’EqualiTeam has been providing free medical care to displaced or vulnerable populations. It aims to provide quality professional care and fill critical gaps in access to healthcare, whether due to lack of services, translation, finances, etc.
We are a small organization with just one salaried employee, and operate mainly on a voluntary basis, with healthcare professionals bringing their skills to patients. Our previous projects include a clinic for refugees on the Greek island of Samos, a mobile unit in Poland in 2022 to support refugees from Ukraine, and an emergency project in Libya in 2023.
The Northern Greece project
Since 2023, Med’EqualiTeam operates in northern Greece to provide access to basic medical care for people on the move. Our actions focus mainly on:
- The establishment of free medical consultations
- An Health education program
Medical mobile unit
People living in camps, whether documented or undocumented, are often unable to access adequate healthcare due to the isolation of the camps, the irregular presence of medical staff and barriers to access including the lack of provided translators and finances to travel into Thessaloniki for specialists. In response to the camps’ geographic isolation, we operate a mobile clinic that moves to community centres near the camps to provide basic care to the displaced. We continue to develop our network to expand our coverage in hard-to-reach areas.
The team is made of 3-4 medical volunteers, 3 coordinators and 3-4 community volunteers.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Your main role will be to undertake and support primary healthcare consultations in different settings each day.
Our doctors are managing acute health issues and a whole other range of healthcare needs. As of today, chronic diseases is not part of our scope so we refer patients with diabetes and high blood pressure, but a knowledge of management is helpful to assess and explain the patient.
Our nurses and paramedics are responsible for triage, taking vital signs and observations, wound care and facilitating the consultations.
All the consultations are done with a translator (in person or remote). Our medical coordinator is present for any guidance, notably through our guidelines and referral pathway.
Throughout your stay with us, you will have to be flexible and adaptable, as we are constantly adapting our services to refugee needs. You will also be required to help with other tasks to keep the operation going, such as restocking the mobile units and other support tasks.
